An l-shaped building, represented by the drawing below, has outer dimensions of 820 feet by 620 feet and is uniformly 20 feet wide.

The length of the wire from point n to point e on the building is given by the perimeter of the inner surface of an l-shaped building.

Given,

The outer dimensions of 820 feet by 620 feet.

The width is 20 feet wide.

Therefore, the inner dimension is given by,

(820 - 20 - 20) feet by (620 - 20 - 20) feet

= 780 feet by 580 feet.

The perimeter of the rectangle is given by,

P = 2 (l + w)

where, l = length of the rectangle

           w = width of the rectangle.

P = 2 ( 780 + 580 )

= 2 ( 1360)

= 2720 feet.

Therefore, the  length of the wire to be string directly from point n to point e on the building is 2720 feet.
