An L-shaped object, made of thin rods of uniform mass density, is suspended with a string as shown in figure. If AB = BC, and the angle made by AB with downward vertical is θ, then:
(A) tan θ =
1/(2√3)
(B) tan θ =
1/2
(C) tan θ =
2/(√3)
(D) tan θ =
1/3

Thus the value of tan θ =  1/3

Option (D) is correct.

Explanation:

Torque  = r x F

Wherein

  • This can be calculated by using either  τ =r1 F  or τ =r . F1
  • r1 = perpendicular distance from origin to the line of force.
  • F1 = component of force perpendicular to line joining force.

mg C1 x1 = mg sinθ

mg C2x2 = (S1S2 - S2C2) mg = mg L / 2 cosθ - mg L sinθ

mg C1x1  = mg C2x2

=> tan θ  = 1/3

Thus the value of tan θ =  1/3
