➡A metal oxide is yellow when hot and white when cold.
➡This is because of looses of oxygen on heating. This is because of metal excess defect due to the presence of extra number of cations at interstitial site in ionic solids.

HOPE IT HELPS YOU :)

Zinc oxide is an example of Non- Stoichiometric defect under the category metal excess defect (excess cations occupying the interstitial site).
In ZnO, Zn2+ ions occupy the interstial sites and electrons trapped in the interstial sites for the neutralization.
Crystals that shows such type of defect are generally coloured.
Zinc oxide is white in color but on heating it turns into yellow because on heating it loses oxygen reversibly at high temperature.
