The distance of image from the lens will be f/2.

An object is placed at a distance f/3 from a convex lens.

We have to find the distance of image from the lens.

Concepts :

  • A convex lens converges a parallel beam of light. That's the reason to call it converging lens.
  • A convex lens is thicker at the center and get thinner as we move towards the edge of it.
  • It is used in microscopes, magnifying glasses , correction of hypermetropia , camera lens in cameras etc..
  • focal length of convex lens is taken as positive.

Here, object distance, u = -f/3

focal length = +f

using lens formula,

\frac{1}{f} =\frac{1}{v} -\frac{1}{u}\\\\\implies\frac{1}{f} =\frac{1}{v} -\frac{1}{-f/3}\\\\\implies\frac{1}{v}=\frac{1}{f}-\frac{3}{f}=-\frac{2}{f}\\\\\implies v=-\frac{f}{2}

Therefore the distance of image from the lens will be f/2.
