object distance u= 8 cm

focal length f = 10 cm

image distance v= ?

mirror formula 1/u+1/v=1/f

1/v=(1/f)-(1/u)

= 1/10–1/8

= (4–5)/40

1/v=-1/40

v=-40 cm

-ve sign indicates the image is formed on the other side of the mirror, virtual and erect.

The image formed is virtual, erect and magnified.

  • Given,

                u = 8 cm, f = 10 cm

                     f > u

  • The object is placed between focus and pole of the mirror.
  • In this case, the image is formed behind the mirror.
  • The image formed would be virtual, erect and enlarged.

Ray diagram:

  • Ray from A parallel to principal axis, passes through focus after reflection.
  • Ray from A passing through center of curvature is undeviated after reflection.
  • When these two rays are extended backwards, they meet at point A'.
  • A'B' is the image of object AB which is virtual, erect and magnified.
