an object is placed at a large distance in front of a concave mirror with radius of curvature 40cm. where will the image be formed ?
i know that there is data missing, but this is how it has been asked in S.Chand. in the solution the answer has been given as 20cm. i would like to know how they have arrived at that answer

see friend the answer is 20 only.As the object is placed at a large distance and radius of curvature is 40cm,that means object is at infinity and also we know that R =2f. So by solving u will get 20cm as the image will form at focus.

Answer:

The image formed will be at focus and the distance of image will be 20cm.

Explanation:

Focal length:

  • The focal length of the lens is the distance between the lens and the image sensor when the subject is in focus.

Image formed:

  • An object is placed at a large distance in front of concave mirror means the object is at infinity. When the object is at infinity then the image is formed at focus.
  • Also radius of curvature is equal to the twice of focal length.

                        R = 2f

  • So, to find the distance of image formed it is enough to find the focal length.

              Given Radius of curvature R = 40cm

                  then     f = R/2

                               f = 40/2

                              f = 20cm

          Hence the image is formed at focus and the focal length is 20cm.
