An object of length 4 cm is placed in front of a concavemirror at distance 30 cm. The focal length of mirror is 15 cm.

a) Where will the image form?

b) What will be the length of image?

H = 4cm, U = -30, F = -15.

(a) using mirror formula, we have

1/v + 1/u = 1/f

therefore, 1/v = 1/f - 1/u

1/v = 1/-15 - 1/-30

1/v = 1/30 - 1/15

1/v = -1/30

therefore, v = -30

Hence, the image will be formed at a distance of 30cm on the same side as the object.

(b) For a mirror, linear magnification is

M = h¹/h = - v/u

therefore, h¹ = - v/u h = -30/-30 *4 = -4cm

Therefore, the length of the image is the same as the object i.e. 4cm but it is inverted in nature.
