An object of mass 1 kg travelling in a straight line with a velocity
of 10 m s–1 collides with, and sticks to, a stationary wooden
block of mass 5 kg. Then they both move off together in the
same straight line. Calculate the total momentum just before
the impact and just after the impact. Also, calculate the velocity
of the combined object.

Given:-

m = 1kg,

u1=10ms−1

M=5 kg and

u2= 0ms−1

Find out:-

The total momentum just before the impact and just after the impact. Also, calculate the velocity of the combined object.

Solution:-

From conservation of momentum

Initial momentum = final momentum

mu1 + Mu2 = (m+M)v

1×10 + 5×0 = (1+5)v

10=6v

Hence, the velocity of both is v =5/3ms−1

Total momentum before is 10 kgms−1

From momentum conservation, total momentum after is 10kgms−1.
