Questíon :-

An object of mass 1kg travelling in a straight line with a velocity of 10m/s collides with, and sticks to, a stationary wooden block of mass 5kg. Then they both move off together in the same straight line. Calculate the total momentum just before the impact and just after the impact. Also, calculate the velocity of the combined object.

Gíven :-

⟶ m = 1kg

⟶ u_{1} = 10{ms}^{ - 1}

⟶ m = 5kg

⟶ u_{2} = 0{ms}^{ - 1}

To fínd :-

⟶the total momentum just before the impact and after impact

⟶ the velocity of the combined object

Solutíon :-

From conservation of momentum

Initial momentum = final momentum

⟶ mu_{1}  + mu_{2} =  {(m + m)}^{v}

⟶1 × 10 + 5 × 0 = (1+5)v

⟶10 = 6v

Hence, velocity of both is v =  \frac{5}{3}  {ms}^{ - 1}

Total momentum before is 10kgms−1

From momentum conservation, total momentum after is 10kgms−1

Answer:

object of mass 1 kg travelling in a straight line with a velocity of 10 m s 1 collides with, and sticks to, a stationary wooden block of mass 5 kg. Then they both move off together in the same straight line. ... The total momentum after collision is also 10 kg m/s.
