Answer:   1.67 m/s

Explanation:

Given :

masses of the two objects:  m1 = 1 kg ;    m2 = 5 kg  and the velocities of that two object:    u1 = 10  m/s ;        u2 = 0

Momentum of the system just before collision, Pi = m1 u1 + m2 u2

Pi = 1 x 10 + 5 x 0 = 10 kg m/s

Mass of the combined object, M = m1 + m2 = 6 kg

Let velocity of combined object be v.

According to conservation of momentum,

momentum of the system just after the collision, Pf = Pi

Pf  = 10 kg m/s

M v = 10

or, 6 x v = 10

or, v = 5 / 3 m/s = 1.67 m/s

Answer:

Given,

m = 1kg,

u1=10ms−1

M=5 kg and

u2= 0ms−1

From conservation of momentum

Initial momentum = final momentum

mu1 + Mu2 = (m+M)v

1×10 + 5×0 = (1+5)v

10=6v

Hence, the velocity of both is v =5/3ms−1

Total momentum before is 10 kgms−1

From momentum conservation, total momentum after is 10kgms−1.
