I assume the original question intended to ask for tension in a string, rather than a spring (as written). If so, it is clear that the tension becomes negative at the top of the circle, and since one cannot push on a string, the object simply ceases to travel through the circular path. If one tried to do so, the object would fall downward before reaching the top of the circle, and would result in a very large impulse of force at the instant the string becomes taut again.
