If the object is kept at 25 cm and the focal length is 10 cm then, the distance of the image from the lens is + 16. 67 cm and the size of the image is – 3.3 cm and thus the image is real and inverted.

Explanation:

The size of the object, ho = 5 cm

The object distance, u = - 25 cm

The focal length , f = 10 cm

Let the image distance be denoted as “v” cm and the height of the image be denoted as “hi”  cm.

Using the Lens formula, we get

1/v – 1/u = 1/f

⇒ 1/v = 1/f + 1/u

Substituting the values of u and f

⇒ 1/v = 1/10 + 1/[-25]

⇒ 1/v = 1/10 – 1/25

⇒ 1/v = [5+2] / 50

⇒ 1/v = 3/50

⇒ v = 50/3

v = 16.67 cmthe image is formed on the other side of the object as the image distance is positive.

Now,

Magnification,

m = [v/u] = 16.67 / (-25) = - 0.66 cm ← image is real and inverted

Therefore,

The size of the image is given by,

m = hi/ho

substituting the values of m and ho

⇒ - 0.667 = hi/5

hi = - 3.33 cm

Thus, the distance of image from the lens is +16.67 cm, the size of the image is – 3.33 cm and the image so formed is real and inverted.
