An object is placed on the smooth horizontal surface acted by two horizontal force F₁ = 25N and F₂ = 40 N as shown in figure.

we have to find the magnitude and direction of acceleration of the block.

solution : according to Newton's law, acceleration is the directly proportional to net force acting on the object and direction of it is same as direction of net force.

here net force = F₁ + F₂

= 25 N (east ) + 40N (west )

= -25 N (west) + 40 N (west)

= 15 N (west )

Therefore net force acting on the object is 15 N towards west.

now acceleration, Fnet = ma

⇒15 N = 5kg × a

⇒a = 3 m/s²

Therefore acceleration of the object is 3 m/s² towards west
