This question is testing the concept of acceleration.

Acceleration = change in velocity ÷ change in time

Scenario one :

U

V = 12 m/s

t = 3 seconds

a = ( 12 - U) / 3

3a + U = 12

Scenario two :

U

V = 18m/s

t = 6 seconds

a = (18 - U) / 6

6a + U = 18

Solving one and two simultaneously we have :

3a + U = 12

6a + U = 18

3a = 6

a = 2m/s²

U = 12 - 6 = 6 m/s

Initial velocity is thus 12m/s and the acceleration is 2m/s²
