An object starts to slide over a horizontal surface with an initial velocity of 0.50 m/s. Its velocity decreases at the rate 2 m/s^2. How much time will it take for the object to stop moving?

Solution :-

As per the given question ,

  • Initial velocity = 0.5 m /s
  • Acceleration = - 2 m/s² ( as the velocity decreases at a constant rate deceleration takes place )
  • Final velocity = 0 m /s ( comes to rest )

As the object moves with uniform acceleration throughout it's motion ,

we can use first equation of motion in order to find time

As per the first equation of motion ,

⇒ v = u + at

here ,

  • v = final velocity
  • u = initial velocity
  • a = acceleration
  • t = time taken

On rearranging

⇒ t = v - u / a

⇒ t = 0 - 0.5 / - 2

⇒ t = 5 / 20

⇒ t = 0.25 s

The object will take 0.25 s in order to come to rest
