An object that does not vibrate cannot produce SOUND.

Let's see why !

  • First of all, sound is a pressure wave in which the medium particles vibrate parallel to the direction of propagation of the wave.

Now, for any object to be a source of sound, it needs to vibrate and subsequently vibrate the medium particles in contact with the source.

For example : A tuning fork of 256 Hz vibrates 256 times every second such that it can produce a sound of frequency of 256 Hz (i.e. the medium particles also vibrate at a rate of 256 times per second).

An object that does not vibrate cannot produce Sound.

What is sound?

  • Sound is a mechanical wave which is produced by by vibration of particles
  • Any disturbance that has a particular pattern and is caused in a medium due to movement of particles is called sound wave.

How is sound wave produced?

  • Sound wave is a longitudinal wave which means it requires or needs medium to travel.
  • Vibration of particles in the medium causes rarefactions and compressions which in turn leads to propagation of sound wave.
  • So, for production of sound, particles in the host medium must undergo vibration because waves of sound is a mechanical vibration.
