When an object is thrown upwards, the only force acting it is its weight (mg), which is acting downwards, towards the center of mass of the earth.

Using F=ma we can see that the weight acting downwards (F) will cause an acceleration (a) also downwards. This is opposite in direction to the velocity of the object, which is upwards. This opposite acceleration will cause the the velocity to be reduced.
