An object travels 16m in 4sec and another 16m in 2sec. Find the average velocity of object?

To find :

  • Average velocity of the object

Case 1 :

The object does not return back to the initial position

Average velocity = total Displacement / total time

So here as it does not return to initial position,

Total Displacement = 16+16 = 32 metres

Total time = 4+2 = 6 seconds

Average velocity = 32/6 = 5.33 m/s

Case 2 :

The object returns back to initial position causing Displacement to be 0 metres

Average velocity = total Displacement / total time

Average velocity = 0/6

Average velocity = 0 m/s

The average velocity can either be 5.33 m/s or else 0 m/s
