Answer:

6 m/s

Explanation:

total distance=20m+16m=36m

total time=4s+2s=6s

average speed=total distance /total time

=36m/6s

=6m/s

Given :-

A object travels 20 meters in 4 seconds and another 16 meters in 2 seconds .

Required to find :-

  • Average Speed of the object ?

Formulae used :-

\dagger{\boxed{\tt{ Average \; speed = \dfrac{ Total \; distance }{ Total \; time \; taken  } }}}

Solution :-

Given information :-

A object travels 20 meters in 4 seconds and another 16 meters in 2 seconds .

we need to find the average speed of the object .

From the given information we can conclude that ;

Case - 1

Distance ( d1 ) = 20 meters

Time ( t1 ) = 4 seconds

Case - 2

Distance ( d2 ) = 16 meters

Time ( t2 ) = 2 seconds

Here,

In order to use the above formula we should find the total distance and total time taken

So,

\Rightarrow{\rm{\bf{ Total \ distance = {d}_{1} + {d}_{2} }}}

This implies,

Total distance = 20 m + 16 m

Total distance = 36 meters

Similarly,

\Rightarrow{\rm{\bf{ Total \ time \ taken = {t}_{1} + {t}_{2} }}}

This implies,

Total time taken = 4 s + 2 s

Total time taken = 6 seconds

Using the formula ;

\dagger{\boxed{\tt{ Average \; speed = \dfrac{ Total \; distance }{ Total \; time \; taken  } }}}

By substituting the values we get ;

\rightarrowtail{\tt{ Average \ speed  = \dfrac{ 36 \ m }{ 6 \ s } }}

\rightarrowtail{\tt{\bf{\underline{ Average \ speed = 6 \ m/s }}}}

Therefore,

Average Speed of the object = 6 m/s

Additional Information :-

1. Speed is a scalar quantity .

2. Speed required only magnitude but not direction .

3. In some cases we should divide the speed of the bodies in 2 cases by 2 in order to find the average speed ( when their speeds are mentioned ) .

4. Velocity is a vector quantity .

5. Velocity requires both magnitude and direction .

6. The S.I. units of speed and velocity is meter per second ( m/s )
