An observer sitting in line of two tanks, watches the
flashes of two tanks firing at each other at the same time,
but he hears the sounds of two shots 2 s and 3.5 s after
seeing the flashes. If distance between the two tanks is
510 m, find the speed of sound.

Answer:

340m/s

Explanation:

if the sound starts at the same time but one of the tank is farther then the other so the sound from the tank which is farther will require more time

suppose it takes X sec for the sound from the farther tank(tank1) to reach the observer and y sec from the nearer tank(tank 2) to reach the observer so the time req. for sound from tank 1 to 1st reach tank 2 will be X-Y sec (as all three of them both the tanks and the observer are sitting or placed on a same line )

so here X=3.5 Y=2

so the time for sound to cover the distance between the two tanks will be 3.5-2= 1.5sec

given distance between the tanks is 510m

so the speed will be =510/1.5= 34ms^-1

hope it helps
