the net energy lost during the process is

PE from height h + PE from depth x

=mgh+mgx

=mg(h+x)

since we are asked to calculate average resistance

=net energy/depth

=mg(x+h)/x

=mg(1+h/x)

hope this helps

Anonymous: options - 1) mg[1+(h/x)]

2) mg[1+(h/x)²]

3) mg[1-(h/x)]

4) mgh
