Let us study about : Ore of Zinc

Explanation:

An ore of zinc when reacts with dilute hydrochloric acid produce a gas with smell of rotten egg is identified a " Zinc blende " (ZnS).

The steps involved in its metallurgy :

1.Concentration of ore

It is removing impurities of ore.

As it is sulphide ore so, it is done by froth flotation process .

The powdered sulphide ore containing impurities is poured in the tank containing pine oil and water. Now with the help of compressor compressed air is passed. As a result froth appears to which ore sticks and impurities are left behind.

2. Oxidation of ore : Roasting

In it the ZnS ore is heated in presence of air and it forms :

ZnS --------> ZnO +SO₂

3. Reduction of metal oxide : Done by using reducing agent "carbon "

ZnO + C ---> ZnO + CO₂

It is also called as smelting .

4.Refining

After smelting there is no need of Refining as the Zn obtained is 98% pure .
