Answer:

The smell of rotten egg is given by sulphide ores only because the sulphur has the characteristic smell of rotten egg.

The sulphide ores are concentrated by froth floatation method.

The metals are obtained from the conc. ores by using pyrometallurgy, or smelting at high temperature.

to obtain metal   from its concentration ore :

(1) Roasting -

- Sulphide ores on heating in presence of air concentrates ore into metal oxide.

MS + O2 --> MO + SO2

(2) Reduction with carbon -

- Metal oxides are reduced to pure metal by heating with coke(carbon).

MO + C --> M + CO2

The gas which smells like that of rotten eggs is H2S. Hence the ore is a sulphide ore. It is concentrated by froth floatation prices. The metal is obtained from the concentrated ore in the following types:

  1. Roasting :-

Heating the ore strongly in the presence of air. The metal sulphide is converted in metal oxide along with evolution of sulphur dioxide gas.

Metal sulphide + O2 ----->(roasting) Metal oxide + SO2

2. Reduction with carbon :-

On heating the metal oxide with carbon, it is reduced to free metal.

Metal oxide + Carbon -----> Metal + Carbon monoxide.
