An organic compound A(C7H8) when oxidised by alkaline potassium permanganate gives compound B(C7H6O2). Compound B when treated with Br2/FeBr3 gives compound C(C7H5O2Br). Identify the compunds A,B,C and write the chemical reactions.

A is Toluene, B is Benzoic Acid C is Meta-bromo Benzoic Acid.

1) A is Toluene with chemical formula ( C6H5- CH3).

2) Oxidation of Toluene with Alkaline Potassium Permanganate solution gives Benzoic Acid( C6H5 - COOH) , as KMNO4 solution is a very stronf oxidising agent in case of cyclic compounds like benzene.

3) Reaction of Benzoic Acid with Br2 + FeBr3 gives Meta Bromo Benzoic Acid as FeBr3 is a lewic acid and therefore increases chance of meta substitution.
