An organic compound (C_8 H_10 O_2) rotates plane-polarized light. It produces pink color with a neutral FeCl_3 solution. What is the total number of all the possible isomers for this compound?

we have to find the total number of all possible isomers for this compound.

solution : An organic compound C8H10O2 rotates plane polarized light, it produce pink colour with neutral FeCl3 solution. it means, compound C8H10O2 corresponds positively to neutral FeCl3 so it will be a phenolic compound.

Therefore are three structures ( ortho meta para) which can be formed by changing position of -CH(CH3)-OH. and each structure has two optical isomers ( Dextro and levo ).

Therefore total number of isomers is 3 × 2 = 6
