Given info : an organic compound contains 39.5 % of carbon 6.4 % of hydrogen and 54.1% of oxygen.

To find : the emperical formula of the compound.

solution : first find percentage/atomic mass ratio of each element.

For carbon ⇒ 39.5/12 = 3.3

For hydrogen ⇒6.4/1 = 6.4

For oxygen ⇒54.1/16 = 3.4

Find the simplest ratio of them,

C : H : O = 3.3 : 6.4 : 3.4 = 1 : 2 : 1

Therefore the emperical formula is CH₂O
