For Carbon
percentage composition= 40%
At. wt= 12
Relative no. of atoms= 40/12=3.33

For Hydrogen
percentage composition=6.66%
At. wt=1
Relative no. of atoms=6.66

For oxygen
percentage composition=100-46.66= 53.34%
At. wt=16
Relative no. of atoms=3.33

Simplest whole number ratio is 1:2:1

Therefore the empirical formula is
CH2O
