When an organic compound with molecular formula C3H8O reacts with Na metal to produce hydrogen gas then the structure of the compound and chemical equation of the reaction is explained below:

  • The compound has 3 carbon atoms and one oxygen so, it is an alcohol.
  • If the compound contantains one carbon then it's name will be methanol, if two carbon atoms then the alcohol will be ethanol and if it contains three carbon atoms then the name is propanol.
  • The name of the alcohol is propanol.
  • When sodium reacts with alcohol then it extracts acidic hydrogen from the alcohol.
  • The reaction of sodium with propanol is given by:
  • CH3-CH2-CH2-OH + Na → CH3-CH2-CH2-ONa + \frac{1}{2} H2
  • The structure of the compound C3H8O is CH3-CH2-CH2-OH.
