An organic compound X on oxidation gives Y, which on treatment with sodium hydroxide gives sodium ethanoate and water.
(1)Identify X and Y.
(2)Write the chemical equations for both the reactions. ​

Compond X is C2H5OH which is called ethanol , second member of alcohol .

On oxidation of ethanol in presence of potassium premangnet or potassium dicholomate it forms Ethanoic acid CH3COOH , which on treating with sodium hydroxide  NaOH it gives sodium enthonate CH3COONa and water H2O.

X- C2H5OH ethanol.

Y-CH3COOH ethanoic acid.
