Sodium metal reacts with ethanol to form sodium ethoxide and hydrogen. The reaction involved is as follows:

2C2H5OH + 2Na ==> 2C2H5ONa + H2

Therefore X is ethanol
                 Y is hydrogen gas

ethanol reacts with sodium metal to form the gas y where X is ethanol and reacts with sodium 2 from y which is a gas and this is hydrogen
