'Truth is stranger than fiction', I have personally seen the truth behind this statement. A few years back, when I was teaching in Delhi, I had a student named Sudipto Ghosh in class ninth who possessed an out of the box thinking and excellent communication skills. His answers in the class reflected his thorough understanding when it came to answering orally, but when he took his first assessment I was shocked to see his poor performance as opposed to the classroom response. On talking to his previous year's teacher I got to know that he had been averse to writing since a year and a half. I supposed it was due to his over confidence or adolescence changes. I tried to talk with him separately, but it did not yield any results.
Slowly the other teachers also got to realize that some good performers in the class also started shirking writing and maintaining their notebooks looking at his behavior and attitude. When I talked with the Counselor of the school, I got to know that his parents were well aware of his digression and sort of made peace with the deterioration. Rather they had convinced the school authorities also to not to be harsh with him and wait for him to change. Nevertheless, I tried to meet the parents and convince them that he should be counselled by an expert, but again it was in vain.
As a teacher, it really did disturb me that I was not able to bring about a desirable change in his behavior. I taught him for two years, bearing with his reluctance and oddities.
It was his class X and he had opted for board exams, I could not quite understand his intent behind it. When the result was declared I got to know that he had performed poorly and could get only seven point four CGPA, though he was capable of ten CGPA. The result, he could not get the stream he wanted and it caused him a lot of frustration. My ex-colleagues told me so.
I shifted from Delhi and had to give up teaching there. Still whenever I remember him I feel a sense of void as it well reminds me that an empty bad cannot stand upright. Nonetheless, I pray for his normalcy and well being. He would be writing twelfth exams this year. May God be with him!
