An oscillator of mass 100g is performing damped oscillations. Its amplitude becomes half of its initial amplitude after 100 oscillations. If this period is 2 s find the damping coefficient.

Explanation:

m = 100g , T=2s for 100 oscillations

So , t= 2s × 100 oscillations = 200sec

b=?

A(t) = A e^-bt/2m

A/2 = A e^-bt/2m

2^-1 = e^-bt/2m

ln 2 = bt / 2m

b=0.693×2×100÷200

b=0.693 dyne / sec

Hence b = 0.693 dyne/sec
