RLC series circuit

An RLC series circuit is underdamped. to make it overdamped , the value of R has to be increased.

  • for underdamped: (\frac{R}{2L})^2 < \frac{1}{LC}
  • for  critically damped: (\frac{R}{2L})^2 = \frac{1}{LC}
  • for overdamped : (\frac{R}{2L})^2 > \frac{1}{LC}

To make underdamped to overdamped in case of RLC series circuit , value of R needs to be increased. A circuit is called in overdamped state when two superimposed exponentials drives the current to zero.

It should be noted that :

The damping ratio is a measure describing how rapidly the oscillations decay from one bounce to the next.

  • This damping ratio is between 0 and 1 when , underdamped.
  • this ratio should be 1 when critically damped.
  • this ratio should be greater than 1 when overdamped.
