An unbalanced constant force, acting on a particle, causes it to

move along straight line. The graph, showing the variation of the

displacement of the particle with time is the graph labelled as :

1(A) 2(B) 3(C) 4(D)

When an unbalanced constant force is acting on a particle, the particle will show Non-uniform motion. The accleration will be non-zero.

Accleration is there, this means the velocity is constantly changing. And also the body is moving in straight line, the displacement would be positive.

Coming to the graph:

According to law of inertia, a body will maintain its state of rest or uniform motion until & unless compelled by an external unbalanced force.

In Graph A, the body is at rest. And in Graph B and C, it is moving with uniform motion. So, In all these three cases, external unbalanced force is not acting.

The slope of the displacement time graph gives the velocity of the body. The velocity is changing here, so the graph will be curve like here in 4th graph (Option D) Here the body is in Non-uniform motion and have some acceleration.

Whenever you are determining the type of motion by using graphs, first of all think of the relationship between the quantities. And then predict by the help of following:

  • Slope of distance time graph = Speed
  • Slope of displacement time graph = Velocity
  • Slope of speed time graph = Accleration
  • Slope of velocity time graph = Accleration

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

  • Area under the speed time graph = Distance
  • Area under the vel. time graph = Displacement
  • Area under the accl. = Change in Vel.
