It is acetic acid or ethanoic acid that comprises 3 – 9 % of the vinegar.

Thus, the characteristic pungent smell of this acid is found in vinegar too, which is 
caused due to the action of bacteria on alcohol. 

Actually, this bacteria triggers the 
oxidation of alcohol and induces the characteristic sour taste of the acetic acid, which is available in vinegar too.
