An unknown compound was found to have a percent composition as follows: 47.0% potassium, 14.5% carbon, and 38.5% oxygen. What is its empirical formula? If the true molar mass of compound is 166.22g/mol, what is its molecular formula?

To find the ratio in moles you divide by the Ar of each element.

Using approximate values:

Ratio in grams C:H:O⇒

40:6.7:53.3

Ratio in moles ⇒

4012:6.71:53.316⇒

3.33:6.7:3.33

Dividing through by 3.33⇒

1:2:1

So the empirical formula is:

CH2O
