Hey Friend,

Answer -
This happens because of the state of matter and thereby, rate of diffusion.

Explanation -

1. Unlit incense stick is solid in state
In solids, molecules are very closely packed, so practically no movement occurs there. It is a rigid body... Thus, the rate of diffusion is the least in solids. Therefore, one can smell unlit incense stick only when we are close to it.

2. Lit incense stick converts into gaseous state
In gases, the molecules are far apart and are in constant random motion. Due to this property of gases, the molecules are able to distribute evenly throughout the space in which they are enclosed...Thus, the rate of diffusion is maximum in gases. Therefore, one can smell lit incense stick from far away.

Hope it helps!

Answer- We know that molecules of gas are far away from each other and gas has big intermolecular spaces and molecules of gas can move here and there freely and can cover quite big distances.

An unlit incense stick gives us smell when we are close it because molecules of solids are very close to each other and can't move here and there, so diffusion is least, so we can smell it when we are close to it.

When we lit a incense stick, we get it's smell when we are close to it but when we are farther away from it, we still can smell the pleasant smell of incense stick because of diffusion in gases, as now the solid incense stick is converted into gaseous state and can move here and there (the fumes) and reached till our nose and we smell it.
