The probability that it is a defective or a red pen is 0.9

Step-by-step explanation:

No. of blue pens = 60

No. of red pens = 40

Total No. of pens = 100

Half of the pens of each one is defective.

Defective blue pens = 30

Defective red pens = 20

So, Total no. of defective pens = 30+20=50

1 pen is drawn

Probability of getting defective pen =\frac{\text{No. of defective pens}}{\text{Total no. of pens}}=\frac{50}[100}

Probability of getting red pen =\frac{\text{No. of red pens}}{\text{Total no. of pens}}=\frac{40}{100}

So, the probability that it is a defective or a red pen =\frac{50}{100}+\frac{40}{100}=\frac{90}{100}=\frac{9}{10}=0.9

Hence the probability that it is a defective or a red pen is 0.9
