The error is not considered a mutation until it is duplicated by DNA replication and repaired in the DNA.
• The effects of a mutation on an organism can be positive, negative, or neutral (have no effect on the fitness of the organism).
• Another important source of genetic variation is recombination. Each of us is made up of a combination of our parents' genetic material. When homologous DNA strands align and cross across during recombination, this genetic material is combined.
• Maternal and paternal DNA is effectively "shuffled" through recombination, resulting in novel combinations of variations in the daughter germ cells.
