Circumstances that forced the Indian farmers to cultivate opium are -

1. When British conquered Bengal they forced the farmers to grow opium.
2. The poor peasants borrowing money from village headmen. But when the crops failed the farmers were not able to pay back . This forced them to grow opium.
3. By November 2001, the collapse of the economy and the scarcity of other sources of revenue forced many of the country's farmers to resort to growing opium for export.
4. When the British buy tea from China they had to pay silver coins . So to stop this loss of silver. They searched for a commodity to sell in China . So they thought that opium is such an item and they forced the farmers to grow opium.
5. The farmers are forced to grow opium than other crops in the land .
