There are two main causes responsible for growth of population is in Assam . The natural growth of population and the migration from various groups to Assam . They are discussed as :

The growth of population of Assam is at normal rate . It is same as India's growth of population .

The migration problem is regarded the major cause for population growth in Assam . From the time of British migration is occurring in Assam . First it occurred at slower rate but then it started rapidly. The migration of many landless muslim peasants from the then East Bengal. Another event of migration is the migration of Hindu refugees during the time of partition from the then East Pakistan.

Generally two causes are responsible for high population growth in Assam. One of these is the natural growth of population and the other is the large scale migration into the state from outside. The natural growth of population depends on the birth and death rates. The natural growth of the population of Assam is growing almost at the same rate of India's population. If there was no large scale migration to Assam, the growth of Assam's population would have taken place at normal rate. Thus human migration is regarded as the main cause of population growth in Assam.
