Answer:
India being a diverse country with many customs, religions, traditions etc. and imparting equal kind of education is not an easy task. After Independence, people strongly demanded for free and compulsory universal elementary education. Our failure to achieve universalisation of elementary education has resulted in a number of interconnected problems which include population explosion, prevalence of unacceptable levels of poverty, unemployment and diseases, lack of adequate skilled and competent manpower to achieve economic goals.
Education in Meghalaya has made phenomenal progress since it became a fullfledged State in 1972. The Government of Meghalaya has done a considerable job in providing facilities for the upliftment and continuous growth of schools in all corners of the State.
Meghalaya also attempts to universalize elementary education. Since the inception of the State, the main thrust has been extension of educational facilities in the backward areas and the enrolment of out of school children. The State has therefore, launched various programmes to attract children to school, to stop dropout and stagnation in a way to bring qualitative and quantitative development.
Today education is playing a dominant role in bringing about new changes in the society. It is aptly remarked when it is laid that education is responsible for preservation and transmission of culture. Elementary schools most in rural areas have unattractive school environment, lack of proper infrastructure and insufficient teaching materials which work as a de-motivating force for the retention of students.
