the circumstances were-

On 30th january, 1930, Mahatma Gandhi sent a letter to viceroy Irwin stating 11 demands in which one of them of abolition of tax on salt

As the oppressive and brutal nature of British government, which was shown in the act passed by them that made the extraction of salt by the people from ocean or seas was made illegal

Salt was something that was an essential part of food and common people's lives but when it was banned and the processed salt from factories had high prices then it became difficult for people to use salt

seeing this condition, mahatma gandhi decided that there was a need to make people aware about human rights and thus he decided to break this law by obtaining salt from sea water
