Sodium being electropositive and chloride being electronegative, chlorine takes one electron from Sodium and becomes negatively charged while Sodium itself becomes positively charged because it donated it's electron. From this, both sodium and chlorine achieved noble gas configuration and since one is negatively charged and one is positively charged, they form an ionic bond.
