The opening scene of Kafan begins with the author describing the father and son duo Ghisu and Madhav. He describes them as lazy and utterly selfish and totally inhuman. They have no money to buy the shroud, but despite all the struggle, when they are able to beg and get a few rupees, they blow it up in drinking.  

They have an unshakable faith in God that he will provide them with the money. They are also a very contented a lot and is just happy to sit lazily and do nothing.
