The northern plains with their vast level of land high population density and rich economic factors provided the most favourable condition for railways growth. However a large number of rivers with their wide river beds requiring construction of bridges posed some obstacles. In the hilly terrain of peninsar region railway tracks are laid through low hills gaps or tunnels . The Himalayan ranges too are unfavourable for construction of railway lines due to high relief sparse population and low economic factors. Likewise it was difficult to lay tracks on sandy plains of Rajasthan. The contiguous stretch of Sahyadri could only be crossed by passes. These are the physiographic and economic factors influencing the distribution of railway pattern.
