To be a well rounded person, we must be able to make solid decisions, figure out problems and work/co-habitat with others. I think from the time we are born, we are shaped and molded socially. When we enter school, we take our behaviors, thoughts and manners to school with us. A child who comes from a home with few boundaries and very little parental supervision often struggles when he/she enters school. If the only way he has ever gotten attention was by yelling, he is going to do that in the classroom. If he has never been taught how to problem solve, then each little issue becomes much bigger and more debilitating than it needs to be. On the other hand, a child who has been given attention and direction at home comes to school more ready to learn. For some students, socialization does not come as easy as it does for others but learning is the same way. Teachers and parents have a huge responsibility to watch over and guide their students/children. It takes a whole village to raise a child.

I do not believe socialization and education can be separated~ they overlap and intermingle from the first step in the classroom. From the teacher/student relationship to the relationships between students~ each one affects how children feel about themselves, learning and their ability to learn. Learning to work in a group is a lesson within itself. Being able to stand up for oneself, to stand up against peer pressure and finding one’s voice in a variety of situations are all lessons that are covered often in school but are not part of a state standard.
