NGOs have played an important role in the Indian democracy. They place a vital role in the development programmes, catalyzing change at the grassroots level. India, owing to its large geographical spread, presents unique challenges and the government alone cannot effectively handle all problems faced by the society. A need for independent organizations is thus felt and NGOs- which are Non-Government Organizations help mobilize public opinion. NGOs perform a variety of social services in the healthcare, education, rural development, child rights, women empowerment, child labour, human rights and environmental sections.

NGOs have also historically helped in the eradication of diseases and the control of epidemics.

NGOs in India play an active role in dealing with specific issues such as children and women rights, child labor, poverty elimination, rural development, caste discrimination and environmental issues. However, in the last couple of decades, more importance has been given to education and health sectors. In the education sector, NGOs have worked towards sending school dropouts in rural areas back to school. As for the health sector, various programs on eliminating diseases such as TB, malaria and leprosy, as well as enhancing sanitation and water facilities have been conducted.
