Analysis often just addresses a specific problem and does not cover the entirety of a discipline.
Now, the main component of analysis is focusing on what is already known about the problem we're trying to solve.
The whole point of this investigation is to yield several realities that can point us in the direction of the information we seek.
- Imagine if we were curious about the immortality of the human soul and, in order to learn more, we decided to think about the nature of the soul. The soul's ability to think is special, and since questioning is itself a thought, the soul can doubt anything without being able to doubt whether it is thinking. The next question is, "What is thinking?"
- Since we would observe nothing in the concept of mind that is contained in the idea of the extended substance called body, and since we might even deny of thought everything pertaining to body - such as having length, breadth, and depth, having distinct parts, having a definite form, being divisible, and so on - without damaging the idea we have of thought, we would infer that thinking is not at all a mode of extended material, because it is the nativity.
- Additionally, we deduce from this that mind must be an attribute of another substance as it is not a mode of extended material. Thinking substance and extended substance are therefore two very different substances.
- This means that nothing that we call destruction actually involves anything other than the change or dissolution of various components of matter that naturally exist forever. Even extended substance is not, in a strict sense, destroyed, so nothing that we call destruction actually results in the destruction of anything else. Similarly, it is simple to determine that even if we claim that a clock is destroyed when all of its gears are broken, nothing is actually destroyed.
This demonstrates that the soul is immortal since it cannot perish and is not divided into any pieces.
We refer to this as analysis or resolution.
