Answer:

Analytical solutions for stresses, strains and fracture parameters in adhesively-bonded composite joints are difficult to obtain. This is because of the complicated geometry of the joints that contain two different types of materials and the complex stress state produced even for a simple joint configuration. Analytical methods require many assumptions and simplifications, which affect the accuracy of the results. Therefore, numerical techniques such as finite element analysis (FEA) are extensively used to analyse un-cracked and cracked adhesively-bonded joints. This chapter is concerned with FEA simulation of mode I fatigue crack propagation in adhesively-bonded composite joints.
